MIAT College of Technology Main Campus Canton, Michigan
Since 1969, MIAT has been providing students with vocational career training and has since established a comprehensively equipped campus in Canton, just half an hour outside of Detroit. Michigan has traditionally been a center for oil and natural gas production as well as aviation. Now it is also the site of a growing alternative and renewable energy market with legislation on the table to further expand these programs statewide. Alongside the still thriving airfields, this growth in the local energy market makes Canton a place well-suited for students to prepare for a career in either the power or aviation industry.
Airframe and Powerplant Technician Program (Aviation) — 20 months*
Detroit was once known as the “Aviation Capital of America,” and a large community of aircraft pioneers remains there today. This makes MIAT’s Canton campus a strategic location for those seeking to pursue a career as an Airframe and Powerplant Technician, also known as an A&P Mechanic. The Airframe and Powerplant Technician Program also teaches students the skills they need to become Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Certificated Technicians.
Power Technician Program — 12 months*
Michigan has one of the largest natural gas storage capacities in the US and is the largest producer of natural gas in the Great Lakes area. These conditions have created enormous opportunities for the growth of the local energy industry. Students who go through this program will gain comprehensive knowledge of the fundamentals of the power industry, equipping them for entry-level positions in this field.
Wind Power Technician Program — 7 months*
Alternative energy already contributed significantly to the Michigan economy. Within the state, alternative and renewable energy is expected to grow in order to create more jobs, allow the state to become more energy independent, and mitigate negative environmental impact. Students who participate in this program will have the advantage of training on an actual turbine nacelle. After completion of the program, graduates may have the opportunity to start a career in the industry just as it begins to take off, both in Michigan and nationwide.
Global Logistics and Dispatch Program — 9 months*
As markets across the globe become more connected, it becomes more important to have competent staff managing communications and resources. Shipping companies, emergency response teams, airfields, etc. all need people to carefully oversee logistics and dispatch. Students who graduate from this program will have many work opportunities in both the public and private sectors.
*Program length without any interruption in training.
