MIAT Named to Military-Friendly Schools List for 3rd Year in a Row
(September 18, 2011 )

MIAT NAMED TO G.I. JOBS LIST OF MILITARY FRIENDLY SCHOOLS FOR THIRD YEAR IN ROW CANTON, MI-MIAT, Michigan Institute of Aviation and Technology, is included on the G.I. Jobs Magazine 2012 List of Military Friendly Schools, their third consecutive year for this distinction.

The list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America's military service members and veterans as students.

Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.

According to Charles Hawes, MIAT President, the school's training programs include skills and certificates that employers prefer for certain technical positions.

"Hiring Armed Forces Veterans is a priority for many of the employers who recruit through our career services department," stated Hawes.

"Students with military background who complete our certificate programs are considered preferred hires in our core technology industries which are aviation, power and transportation," Hawes added.

According to Hawes, the MIAT campus environment accommodates students from many different backgrounds and age groups, including veterans.

MIAT students can complete courses and apply to the work force in as little as 8 to 20 months, depending on their program choice.

Program graduates who choose to continue their education can apply their MIAT course credits toward an associate's or bachelor's degree at certain colleges and universities.

MIAT, with campus locations in Canton, Michigan and Houston, Texas is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).

The Michigan campus offers specialized technology training for aviation technology, power technology, and global logistics/dispatch careers, while the Texas campus currently offers power technology and global logistics/dispatch training only.

To learn more about programs and enrollment at MIAT, military personnel and veterans may experience an online, virtual presentation from any global location. Contact 800.447.1310 for details.

MIAT to Add Wind Turbine Nacelles in Michigan and Texas
(August 2, 2011 )

MIAT students will now experience, full scale, the technology inside a massive wind turbine as they step into their newest super-sized classroom. The school's Power Technology Program will add the complete inner workings of a commercial scale wind turbine to the array of wind turbine parts and other energy industry equipment for hands-on demonstrations in their lab area.

The school acquired two wind turbine nacelles, one for its Canton, MI campus and another for its Houston, TX campus. The nacelles will be converted for training purposes with direction from Program Advisory Committee members who represent multiple global renewable energy manufacturers.

The nacelles are GE 2010 Model 1.5XLE units. As the central components for one of the world's most widely used 1.5 MW wind turbines in its class, there are over 3,300 in operation worldwide.

According to Charles Hawes, President of MIAT, the new equipment adds much to the hands-on portion of the training as students prepare to work on complex equipment currently found in the energy field.

"Our lab area sets us apart from other programs in the country for the renewable energy industry," stated Hawes.

When considering the acquisition, MIAT sought the technical advice of a manager at a large scale manufacturer who was familiar with the two nacelles. He strongly recommended the school capitalize on the opportunity.

"He told us that the level of technical experience with these GE 1.5 XLE models would boost recognition for our graduates in the wind energy industry on a national scale." added Hawes.

The school made arrangements to transport the nacelles, 118,000 lbs.

each, to both campuses and contracted with local firms to construct the permanent pedestals for both units. The equipment is scheduled for delivery mid-August, 2011.

While the more visible components of a commercial wind turbine may be the blades and tower, the nacelles and their internal components (e.g. gearbox, controls and generator) are a significant addition to the school's training curriculum.

"Climb training is only part of what you need to know to perform maintenance on a commercial wind turbine. Employers who hire our graduates want them to know what to do once they get up there, and the best way to teach that is in a real nacelle. We''ll be very fortunate to house these units on campus", said Hawes.

The students in the MIAT Aviation Technology program will be training on this plane as part of their lab experience while earning their FAA Airframe and Powerplant Certificate. On behalf of our students, educators and staff, MIAT would like to extend sincere thanks to Little Caesar Enterprises for their continued support of education in Michigan.

Two MIAT Students Awarded 2010 Scholarships by the Michigan Business Aviation Association
(June 18, 2010 )

JUNE 18, 2010--Two MIAT students were distinguished in June by the Michigan Business Aviation Association (MBAA) as scholarship recipients this year. Darrin Waddell was named the Maintenance Training Award finalist and Mike Trainer received a cash award from the Frank P. Macartney Foundation. Formal presentation of the awards will be made during the MBAA Memorial Golf Classic on Monday, July 19, 2010.

MBAA and its sponsors invite interested students attending college, university or aviation technical schools in the State of Michigan to submit applications for one or more of the annual MBAA Aviation Scholarships.

The MBAA Maintenance Training Award is a King Air BE-200 Initial Maintenance Training Course donated by CAE SimuFlite. This is a 12-day aircraft specific maintenance training course held at the CAE SimuFlite Training Facility in Dallas, Texas. MBAA will also donate a $1,000 cash stipend to the recipient of this award to help offset a portion of the cost of travel, meal and lodging expenses.

The FPM Foundation, established by employees of Aero Dynamics Incorporated in honor of their founder, awards aviation scholarships to outstanding students enrolled in aviation management, maintenance or flight curriculum at various schools throughout Michigan.

David Leach, G-IV Captain and FPMF/MBAA Scholarship Coordinator, said the interview committee was extremely impressed with the commitment to excellence Trainer and Waddell have demonstrated throughout their training at MIAT.

"A successful career in the aviation industry demands this level of unbridled dedication and we are confident these two gentlemen will be immediate assets to whatever aviation organization is wise enough to employ them," stated Leach.

According to Chuck Hawes, MIAT President, two MBAA scholarship awards in the same year for MIAT applicants underscores the quality and professionalism of current members of the school's airframe and power plant program.

"It's a hard working, dedicated group. We're proud of Darrin, Mike, and the other students who represented MIAT throughout the application process. We appreciate the opportunities MBAA provides these students through scholarship programs and other activities," stated Hawes.
