Innovations in Maximum Take-Off Weight: Aviation Industry Advances
(September 25, 2012 )

In an effort to be able to carry more freight in a single trip to locations around the world, a number of aircraft manufacturers had set out to design planes that could accommodate greater loads. Eventually, the "heavy" call sign had to be created to indicate a particular craft would cause significant wake turbulence. While the qualification for "heavy" is the capacity to operate with a gross take-off weight of 300,000 lbs., modern aircraft design has far exceeded this standard.

Late in 2010, from Victorville, California, the Boeing 747-8 Freighter set a new record for the company by taking off with a total weight of 1.005 million lbs! Boeing extended the fuselage of the well-known 747 in order to increase the Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) to 975,000 lbs (442,250 kg). This was a 100,000 lb capacity increase over its predecessor, the 747-400ER.

The flight's test manager, Andy Hammer, said that more than simply proving the aircraft could meet its target MTOW, in the test flight they wanted to prove that they could exceed the expectations of normal operating conditions. This test would demonstrate to the regulatory agency, future clients, and future passengers the quality of safety and reliability of the craft. Having already had a take-off at 975,000 lbs., the point of this second test was to demonstrate cruise ability for that take-off weight. After four hours, the 747-8 touched back down several thousand pounds lighter from spent fuel, completing a flight with the heaviest take-off in Boeing's history.

Amazingly, the Boeing 747-8 takes fourth place for global aircraft MTOW capacity. Two models of the Airbus 380 have MTOW capacities of about 1.3 million lbs. while the Ukranian Antonov An-225 is qualified to weigh 1.323 million lbs. at take-off. The Antonov craft was built to transport the Buran orbiter space craft, and it now commercially carries oversized payloads. There is only one in service; a second has been partially completed.

Part of Boeing's motivation to build this craft was its competition with Airbus 380, which is now the world's largest airliner. While the Airbus is larger in size and has a greater MTOW capacity, Boeing's craft has some innovative features absent in the Airbus. The 747-8 has a new wing design and uses General Electric motors (GEnx-2b), which provide bleed air from the engine's compressor to pressurize the cabin. These features were created with the goal of reducing operation costs. This constant evolution seen in the aviation industry speaks to the need for more highly trained A&P technicians and mechanics to put these planes in the air.

The Graying of the Energy Industry
(September 25, 2012 )

Energy companies are realizing that their competition is not other energy companies... the competition, in fact, is other industries, such as railroads, aviation, and manufacturing. Everyone is looking for the same qualified craft personnel.

Baby Boomers Will Disappear

The energy companies have all relied too long on the baby boomers to serve as the life blood of the craft ranks, and no one seemed to notice when retirement plans began to enter their minds. If you were to tour a major energy company, you would see that the predominant hair color is gray. The workers themselves openly joke about the graying staff but are actually worried about who is going to keep the lights on.

Some companies have been proactive about their legacies and have established succession planning programs. Others are just now getting used to the idea that they will be losing 50% of their personnel due to upcoming retirements. Additionally, Americans are using more power in their everyday lives, causing a greater need for energy. To complicate things, the younger generations have largely not considered entering these technical career fields.

Career Programs to the Rescue

This need for more power and the graying of the industry has caused a perfect storm for those who are in dead end jobs, like to work with their hands, or need a career change. To satisfy the greater demand, trade schools and community colleges now host a number of technical training programs. These programs prepare people with no energy industry experience to enter the industry. They also give industry professionals an opportunity to advance or update their skills.

Most programs will include training in core skill areas, such as OSHA, tools, electricity and basic mechanical concepts, and then specialize in a specific area, such as oil and gas, wind power, power plants, bio mass, geo thermal, and hydro to name a few. The training programs are usually preparing graduates to secure entry-level positions in various divisions of these organizations.

Do Your Research

Anyone looking to train for this exciting industry should carefully choose the program that is the best fit to fast track them into a new career. Each training institution has a unique niche area and base of companies that hire their graduates. Be sure to enroll in an accredited program that has a proven placement record with its graduates.

MIAT Named to Military-Friendly Schools List for 3rd Year in a Row
(September 18, 2011 )

MIAT NAMED TO G.I. JOBS LIST OF MILITARY FRIENDLY SCHOOLS FOR THIRD YEAR IN ROW CANTON, MI-MIAT, Michigan Institute of Aviation and Technology, is included on the G.I. Jobs Magazine 2012 List of Military Friendly Schools, their third consecutive year for this distinction.

The list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America's military service members and veterans as students.

Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.

According to Charles Hawes, MIAT President, the school's training programs include skills and certificates that employers prefer for certain technical positions.

"Hiring Armed Forces Veterans is a priority for many of the employers who recruit through our career services department," stated Hawes.

"Students with military background who complete our certificate programs are considered preferred hires in our core technology industries which are aviation, power and transportation," Hawes added.

According to Hawes, the MIAT campus environment accommodates students from many different backgrounds and age groups, including veterans.

MIAT students can complete courses and apply to the work force in as little as 8 to 20 months, depending on their program choice.

Program graduates who choose to continue their education can apply their MIAT course credits toward an associate's or bachelor's degree at certain colleges and universities.

MIAT to Add Wind Turbine Nacelles in Michigan and Texas
(August 2, 2011 )

MIAT students will now experience, full scale, the technology inside a massive wind turbine as they step into their newest super-sized classroom. The school's Power Technology Program will add the complete inner workings of a commercial scale wind turbine to the array of wind turbine parts and other energy industry equipment for hands-on demonstrations in their lab area.

The school acquired two wind turbine nacelles, one for its Canton, MI campus and another for its Houston, TX campus. The nacelles will be converted for training purposes with direction from Program Advisory Committee members who represent multiple global renewable energy manufacturers.

The nacelles are GE 2010 Model 1.5XLE units. As the central components for one of the world's most widely used 1.5 MW wind turbines in its class, there are over 3,300 in operation worldwide.

According to Charles Hawes, President of MIAT, the new equipment adds much to the hands-on portion of the training as students prepare to work on complex equipment currently found in the energy field.

"Our lab area sets us apart from other programs in the country for the renewable energy industry," stated Hawes.

When considering the acquisition, MIAT sought the technical advice of a manager at a large scale manufacturer who was familiar with the two nacelles. He strongly recommended the school capitalize on the opportunity.

"He told us that the level of technical experience with these GE 1.5 XLE models would boost recognition for our graduates in the wind energy industry on a national scale." added Hawes.

The school made arrangements to transport the nacelles, 118,000 lbs.

each, to both campuses and contracted with local firms to construct the permanent pedestals for both units. The equipment is scheduled for delivery mid-August, 2011.

While the more visible components of a commercial wind turbine may be the blades and tower, the nacelles and their internal components (e.g. gearbox, controls and generator) are a significant addition to the school's training curriculum.

"Climb training is only part of what you need to know to perform maintenance on a commercial wind turbine. Employers who hire our graduates want them to know what to do once they get up there, and the best way to teach that is in a real nacelle. We''ll be very fortunate to house these units on campus", said Hawes.
