HVACR Technician

Get the Skills to Be a Professional HVACR Technician

hvac
HVAC students learn hands-on using industry-standard tools and equipment

9 Month Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Technician Career Training Program

Heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) technicians install, repair, maintain, and upgrade systems that control air temperature and quality in numerous settings and establishments. HVAC job growth is propelled by new construction and the need to retrofit or upgrade older systems as more energy efficient equipment is released and new safety and environmental regulations come into effect.  As systems become increasingly complex, formal training and proper certification are imperative for entering and advancing within the HVAC field.

HVACR Technician Training at MIAT

Working safely on HVACR systems requires a thorough knowledge of the science of heating and cooling, a keen awareness of safety procedures, a proficient familiarity with the tools of the trade, and the ability to perform a variety of manual skills. The HVACR training certification program is composed of both classroom lectures and hands-on learning. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a foundation in HVACR while graduates of this program will gain advanced skills once employed in the field. In addition to learning various systems, the HVACR certification program teaches students:

  • Schematics Use and Interpretation
  • Tool Introduction and Application
  • Piping and Fitting Basics
  • Sheet Metal and Fiberglass Ductwork
  • Air Handling and Hydronics
  • AC and DC Circuits and Components
  • Heating Fundamentals
  • Vent System Selection and Installation
  • Air Conditioning
  • Refrigeration
  • Mechanical and Electronic Controls Troubleshooting
  • Load Calculations
  • Inspection and Documentation
  • Customer Relations

HVACR Certification

Certification is designed to hold workers to a certain standard of knowledge, productivity, and safety. Achieving HVAC certification before entering the workforce is not only important to employers, but also it ensures that HVACR technicians themselves will know how to conduct themselves and handle their work without having to be instructed on the basics. Three distinct certificates are included in the HVACR certification program:

  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Handling Certification including Core, Type I, Type II, Type III, of the Federal Clean Air Act Section – 608  (EPA examinations administered by ESCO on campus)
  • EEO Respect and Anti-Harassment
  • North American Technician Excellence (NATE) Core exams

Getting a Certification in HVACR

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Handbook 2012-2013 projects faster than average growth for employment opportunities in this field. Regardless of economic conditions, HVACR systems must be repaired or replaced as they age and fail in order to preserve food stores, cool/heat living and work spaces, and maintain optimal environments for warehouses.  HVACR technicians are an integral part of the “green jobs” trend, implementing energy efficiency and green construction strategies. Additionally, there is great entrepreneurial potential for those with HVACR industry experience who prefer to be self-employed.

MIAT’s HVACR Technician certification program is 9 months in length for full time students, assuming no interruption in training, and is offered at both the Michigan and Texas campuses. The training allows students to focus on his or her chosen field, graduating faster than it takes to earn a traditional 2- or 4-year college degree or complete a 3- to 5-year apprenticeship.

Becoming A Qualified Energy Technician

The Energy Technology Programs from MIAT College of Technology provide the hands-on training, practical experience and industry support it takes to pursue a rewarding technical career.

Energy technology classes are interactive and led by industry professionals with years of experience working in the field. You’ll get the one-on-one attention and personal support to pick up new skills quickly and the first-hand technical knowledge to feel confident entering the workforce.

MIAT offers both a Certificate and an Associate Degree Program:

  • Energy & Industrial Technician Certificate Program – 9 Months
The Certificate Program was created in response to the energy industry asking for more qualified technicians. MIAT’s goal for this program is to produce graduates who are in the top echelon of their initial on-the-job training due to the foundation of knowledge they receive at MIAT. Energy & Industrial Technician Training provides the building blocks for basic technical knowledge, terminology, equipment, tools, safety procedures and professionalism needed in the power industry. Upon completing the program, graduates continue to receive training from their employers on their specific company requirements and equipment.
  • Associate Degree In Energy Technology – 16 Months
If you are thinking about pursuing MIAT’s 9 month Energy & Industrial Technician program, then consider adding a few short months to achieve an Associate Degree in Energy Technology. The added curriculum will round out your Energy & Industrial Technician training with essential academic skills to move into more complex technical positions and managerial roles.

What Employers Look For…

The energy industry is asking for candidates that have a strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot with complex equipment. Most technicians in the energy technology industry must be able to work a variety of hours with extensive overtime including holidays and weekends. Technicians must also work in confined or elevated spaces, and be able to keep up with the physical demand of the position. To be selected for an energy technology position, candidates may have to pass psychological tests, complete thorough background checks, pass drug tests and take a written knowledge exam.

MIAT programs are developed collaboratively with energy technology employers, so you get the exact skills and training they look for in potential hires. You’ll feel confident moving into any industry setting after gaining so much practical, real world training before you graduate.
